Abstract

Offshore production facilities are essential infrastructure in the oil and gas industry, supporting the production, separation, processing, storage, and transportation of hydrocarbons in complex operating environments. Technological developments have driven improvements in efficiency, reliability, safety, and sustainability through the implementation of automation, smart sensors, digitalization, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance. Nevertheless, offshore facilities continue to face various challenges, including harsh marine environments, corrosion, limited accessibility, high investment requirements, technology integration, and increasing demands to reduce emissions and environmental impacts. This article aims to examine technological developments in offshore production facilities, identify major operational challenges, and evaluate approaches used to improve facility performance. The method employed is a literature review of relevant concepts and technological developments. The review indicates that the integration of digitalization, automation, predictive maintenance, asset integrity management, and energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important in the development of offshore production facilities. Future development should focus on an integrated approach so that productivity improvements can be achieved alongside enhanced safety, energy efficiency, reliability, and environmental sustainability.
